Removing Cat Urine From Carpet Steps

Did your cat urinate on your carpet? Quick action along with the correct steps are needed for removing cat urine from your carpet.


You first must remove as much urine from the carpet as possible. Be sure to wet stains that have already dried with water so that you can get some of the urine out. Heat should not be used since the stain and odor could be set permanently in your carpeting. White towels or white paper towels should be used to soak up the urine as colored ones could leave color on your carpet. Books or other heavy objects should be placed on top of the towels so that urine down in the pad will be removed, too. Using your foot to apply pressure is not advisable as you may get urine on your shoe and track it onto clean carpeting.

After the carpet is thoroughly dry, a specially formulated cat urine removal cleaner should be applied. Do not use common household cleaners as they will not be able to break down the urine and stop the odor for good. A cleaner that contains enzymes, chemicals or bacteria is needed to permanently remove the smell. Ammonia should not be used since the scent may

remind your cat of urine and cause him or her to urinate in the same spot again.

Before applying the cleaner to your carpet, do a test run on a hidden piece of carpet. The stained place along with the surrounding carpet should be soaked thoroughly with the cleaner. Plastic wrap or foil should be placed over the treated area so the carpet stays wet longer giving the cleaner a longer time to work.

After the carpet has dried, if a fresher smell is desired, sprinkle baking soda over the treated area and vacuum. Sniff the carpet to see if the cat urine odor has been completely removed. If you still smell urine odor, you will need to repeat the steps above except treat a larger area this time in case the urine spread further underneath the carpet.

If two treatments don't eradicate the odor, you may have to replace the padding. Treat the subfloor with sealant before laying a new pad to prevent the urine from soaking into the concrete or wood underneath the pad.
